In his senior campaign at Tunkhannock HS, Papi was a 2011 Rawlings second-team All American, and an ESPN Magazine All-State first-teamer while being ranked as the Baseball America #84 best high school prospect. He hit .531 with six home runs, 24 RBI with a .708 on-base percentage that year, while also throwing a no-hitter in the state semi-finals. A 30th round pick of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft, Papi started 28 games as a freshman at Virginia, batting .283 with one home run and 17 runs batted in.
